One could call this agricultural creation "amazing," but that would be corny. It did, however, take a lot of work to carve four miles of trails in 10 acres of corn creating a maze that could keep an adult busy for hours trying to find his way back out.
In a fall ritual of the Estancia Valley, the pumpkins were flying Saturday at Cape Calabaza. And as usual, they were flying a remarkably long way. The annual Punkin Chunkin' competition brought out the big guns as well as the small shooters to try their luck at flinging a pumpkin as far as possible.
Fog, clouds and cool weather did not stop determined pumpkin launchers Saturday morning. The crowd was delighted to see that a catapult tossed a variety of full sized fruit into the prairie at the La Junta Raceways.
The crisp, cool morning air, brilliant orange and yellow leaves and rosy cheeks are all signals that fall is here. And with it, fall fun in the form of twisty corn mazes and tasty apple festivals.
